In 1968, Prof. Franciscis had said that before this trip, the retaining wall in the vineyard (with the workman’s cottage on the top of the mound) would be moved back but that the original lapilli would be left so that it would be ready for the Jashemski’s and their workers to excavate undisturbed roots when they returned in 1970. He was true to his word, and when they were ready to start excavating in 1970, it was all waiting for them.

According to Wilhelmina, it was very impressive to see the areas that Prof. de Franciscis had had prepared for them.
With the generous help of the Ministry at Rome, a portion of the hill of the original volcanic debris and accumulated soil (over 19 feet) on which the workman’s house stood had been removed down to a metre of lapilli, and a new retaining wall had been built on both the south and west sides of the hill.
Work was started in the area near the west side of the hill, which looked like a flower garden as it was covered with masses of the flowers of yellow mullein.

According to Wilhelmina, the two objects were photographed in situ, and then gently removed for further study.
One disintegrated almost immediately upon being exposed to air.
The other was an olive, the flesh of the fruit in part still visible on the seed, when it was examined under a microscope.
