IX.9.6 Pompeii. May 2006. West wall of wide portico, with lararium niche.
This portico was supported by two pillars, by a masonry arch and a long architrave.
The portico had rustic walls with a high black zoccolo/plinth, which, however, was not continuous: in the west wall, and really in the vertical wall from which the arch originated, a semicircular niche covered in white plaster was hollowed out. Underneath of which, was a matching masonry altar, leaning against the wall and parapet of the inter-columnisation.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1889, p.123.

IX.9.6 Pompeii. May 2006. Looking south into garden at IX.9.10. According to NdS, in this area many amphorae were found (see NdS, 1887, p.562; 1888, p.523 and following), so it was assumed the owner had been a “vinarius” (a vintner). On 13th February 1888, a human skeleton with a silver bracelet, four silver and eleven bronze coins were found here (see NdS, 1888, p.525 for description).

On the left of the photo, was the entrance to a latrine, which was under a mezzanine level above. It could not be confirmed whether the room also contained the kitchen, as there was no trace of a hearth, but it was too large to only contain the toilet. It was lit by a circular window, in which was buried the belly of an amphora. On the same east side of the garden was the rear doorway into the adjacent roadway, (see IX.9.10). On the south side of the garden was the domestic sacrarium, entered by a doorway on the west side, (see IX.9.10).
