According to Wilhelmina, a total of 52 bones were found in this vineyard, representing domestic cow, horse, wild boar, domestic dog, sheep, domestic cat and perhaps, goat.
It was probably the presence of bones in the limited area that had been uncovered, that had led the first excavators to name this site, the Foro Boario. Since her excavation had shown that this identification was not valid, the presence of bones must be otherwise explained. This was made the more difficult by the fact that many of the bones were not found in their original location, but were mixed in the backfill which the earlier excavators had pushed over a good part of the site. Upon examination, some of the bones showed cleaver or tool marks, so it began to look as if these bones were the remains of meals eaten at the triclinia. The dog and cat bones could have been the vintner’s pets

According to Wilhelmina, as it was now obvious that the entire area had been planted as a vineyard, and as time was running out for the excavation, two areas of soil were not removed in the south-east quarter. However to make certain that the entire area was planted, excavations were continued around the soil, and it was discovered that the entire area was surrounded by rows of root cavities.
